What are the rules and requirements for ADD power in glasses prescriptions, and how can I adjust my order?

Introduction

For customers ordering glasses, understanding the role of ADD (Near Addition) power on prescriptions is crucial. This article explains when ADD power is required, differences between distance and reading prescriptions, and guidelines for adjusting orders based on specific situations.

Understanding ADD Power

What is ADD power?

ADD refers to the additional magnifying power for near vision included in some prescriptions. It is essential for multifocal lenses like progressive lenses and reading glasses but is excluded from single-vision distance prescriptions. For example, ADD power may be listed as +2.25 on your prescription.

When is ADD power required?

ADD power is mandatory for progressive lenses because these lenses are designed to accommodate distance, intermediate and near vision within a single lens. Without ADD, only single-vision distance lenses can be made from your prescription.

Why doesn’t ADD appear on some prescriptions?

ADD power is specifically used for near or reading prescriptions; for anti-fatigue lenses and progressive lenses. Therefore, prescriptions meant for single-vision distance only do not include ADD.

Compatibility and Lens Selection

Single Vision vs. Progressive Lenses

  • Single Vision Lenses: Designed for either distance or near vision. ADD power is not used here.

  • Progressive Lenses: Multifocal lenses that require ADD power to transition from distance to near vision in the same lens.

Incremental ADD Values

Progressive or reading lenses are offered in ADD increments of 0.50 (e.g., +1.00, +1.50, +2.00). If your prescription lists non-standard ADD values like +0.6, please consult your doctor to get the nearest option as we cannot do lenses with ADD powers that are not increments of 0.50.

Ordering Guidelines and Adjustments

Entering ADD Power on Your Order

When placing your order:

  • Select Single Vision for distance lenses and exclude ADD power.

  • Choose Prescription Readers or Progressives for glasses with ADD, and enter SPH, CYL, AXIS, and ADD values if applicable.

Adjusting an Order Without ADD Power

If your prescription doesn’t include an ADD value but you want progressive lenses, you need to contact your doctor to confirm the ADD power needed.

Modifying or Replacing Your Order

From Single Vision to Progressive Lenses

If your prescription qualifies and includes a valid ADD value, you can request a change to progressive lenses. Additional charges may apply, depending on the lens type (Standard or Enhanced Progressives).

Correcting an Incorrect ADD Entry

If your glasses were incorrectly made with ADD power but intended as single-vision lenses, replacements can be arranged. Simply confirm that you want single-vision distance lenses instead.

Tips for Specific Scenarios

High Prescription Strengths and ADD Power Limitations

Lenses are limited to prescriptions not stronger than -10.00 or +8.00.

Troubleshooting Issues with ADD Power

If your new glasses feel incorrect due to ADD, confirm your prescription with your eye doctor to ensure the appropriate ADD value and lens type are selected.
